"Barcelona is a benchmark when it comes to special events. Its culture, gastronomy, climate, dynamics and infrastructures make the Catalan capital a key destination for companies, who take advantage of meetings to enjoy a few tapas in the sun.
Barcelona also gives an excellent baseline to analyze what is changing in the special events field. I’m a Vatelien and as I’ve worked here since 2008, I’ve had the opportunity of playing a part in all of this.
We can say that there are basically three types of events:
- public events,
- private events and above all,
- professional events from the MICE sector: Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions.
In today’s world of special events, each type of catering service has to stand out and have its own style and its own specials: in one it will be an original and sophisticated presentation, in another it will be impeccable service with waiters presenting dishes in a synchronized manner, or in another, top quality showcooking.
The goal is to impress people. I could even say to awe them. That’s how I was able to attend a meal for 3,000 in a vineyard, with a buffet for another 5,000 spread over five discotheques on the beach, a wedding with 500 guests or even a Barcelona Football Club event for 20,000 attendees.
Special events is a huge business today, and one that requires people with high organizational skills. A city like Barcelona has infinite possibilities for really special events, from the classical Gaudi La Casa Batllo building to the Codorníu wine cellars, from the atypical astronomical observatory Observatoria Fabra to the Miro Museum, which gives spectators a 360° view over Barcelona, hangars and boats...
